International Pediatric Medical Opportunity
The
Issa Trust Foundation Pediatric Medical Rotation program, offers
an international health elective to third year pediatric residents
and board-certified and board-eligible pediatric attending and
physicians interested in acquiring clinical experience abroad.
Jamaica
comprises 4,411 square miles and is divided into 3 counties and 14
parishes. It is 146 miles long and varies between 22 and 51 miles
in width. The climate
is tropical, hot, and humid, and the terrain is mostly mountains
with narrow discontinuous coastal plain.
The parishes of St. Mary and Portland have over 200,000 residents, the
majority of whom live in rural conditions below the poverty line.
About 90% of present day
Jamaica’s population is African
by descent; however, one hears “patois” spoken—a blend of Spanish,
French, English and African dialects. One frequently hears the
words “Irie” (everything is fine, cool, okay); and “boondondonoos”
(best or delightful), reflecting the positive nature of Jamaicans.
THE
PROGRAM
The clinic team consists of a volunteer
pediatrician, third year pediatric resident, who will work along
Jamaican doctors.
Volunteers typically rotate on a four week plus basis.
Volunteers will face challenges of delivering care with
limited resources, both diagnostically and therapeutically, in a
dynamic clinical setting.
A typical day consists of newborn exams and inpatient ward
rounds, followed by a busy outpatient clinic.
Must be fluent in English and will enlist the help in
clinic for “translation” needs.
Issa Trust
Foundation provides housing at
Couples Resort, an all
inclusive resort for all
physician volunteers.
Volunteers will have
use of the resort facilities,
except lunch (Monday thru
Friday).
Additionally, Issa
Trust Foundation offers
transportation to and from the
clinics at no cost.
Participation in the
rotation program is
unremunerated, volunteer
opportunity.
